Finding Balance: Managing School, Work, and an Internship

As a college student, balancing school, work, and an internship can sometimes feel overwhelming. Between attending classes, completing assignments, working scheduled shifts, and fulfilling internship responsibilities, it can feel like there are not enough hours in the day. However, I have learned that creating a routine and staying organized can make balancing these responsibilities much easier.

Staying Ahead Helps with Finding Balance

One of the most important things I have learned is to plan ahead. At the beginning of each week, I look at my class schedule, internship hours, work schedule, assignments, and other responsibilities. Having everything organized allows me to see when I have free time and what needs to be completed first. Instead of waiting until the last minute, I try to use smaller periods of free time throughout the week to complete assignments or prepare for upcoming responsibilities.

Prioritize

Another important part of maintaining balance is understanding your priorities. School, work, and an internship are all important, but some responsibilities may need more attention depending on the day. Creating a list of what needs to be completed, and prioritizing deadlines can help prevent things from becoming overwhelming.

Self-Care

It is also important to make time for yourself. When your schedule becomes busy, it can be easy to feel like every moment needs to be productive. Taking breaks, getting enough rest, spending time with friends or family, and doing things you enjoy can help prevent burnout. Taking care of yourself can make it easier to stay focused when it is time to return to your responsibilities.

Balancing Internships

My internship with Parents Inc. of New Jersey has also helped me understand the importance of managing my time while gaining real-world experience. As a social work student, my internship gives me an opportunity to take what I learn in the classroom and apply for it in a professional setting. Although balancing everything can be challenging, the experience is helping me develop skills that I will be able to use throughout my education and future career.

Ask For Help

Finding balance does not mean that every day will go perfectly. Some weeks will be busier than others and sometimes plans will need to change. The goal is to stay organized, communicate when you need help, and continue moving forward. Learning how to balance multiple responsibilities is a skill, and with practice, it becomes easier to manage.
