My Child is Afraid

Fear is natural for all of us. Your child’s fears might seem silly to you, but they are very real to them.
- Avoid saying things like “there’s nothing to be afraid of.” They don’t understand what you are saying and it doesn’t help them feel better. Let them express their feelings.
- Reassure them that you will keep them safe and hug them when they are afraid.
- Find out the source of the fear, if you can. TV programs, video games and stories told by older siblings can often scare kids. Help kids come up with their own ways to get rid of these fears.
- Fear of the dark is common. Leave a night light on, rearrange the room to eliminate the scary sights, or leave the door open a crack.
